People try to put things in a linear list that makes no sense in real life. A single raid is not 'the start of Vikings'. Vikings themselves were Saxons and Franks originally as I posted. They were setting people on fire for the next 1000 years for practicing the religion Vikings practiced. Saxons themselves rebelled constantly over social changes such as imposed slavery for regular people (Serfdom). It is not like Christians just invaded a country then put things back in order as they were. (Hint: in real life no one likes this and it leads to violence.) Only if you live in fantasy land where you think Norse were OK with being genocided, their culture destroyed, and having all their trade cut off. The Saxon Wars lasted until 804, so the former being a reaction to the latter seems unlikely. The raid on Lindisfarne was in 793 and is commonly taken as the start of the Viking expeditions. They established themselves in aristocracy around Europe, as far south as southern Italy were their ancestors waged war against the byzantines and eventually joined the first crusade. So I would say that vikings had big impact in the Charlamagne era (a good example of why a possible Charlamagne expansion should have a grand campaign map).Īlso the vikings and their decendents were to become important leaders in Europe 8-11th century following their conquests. Historians theorize that the first rus kingdoms in the east were founded by vikings originated from Sweden. Danish and norwegian vikings established themselves as rulers in the british isles and in france. In the era of Charlamagne historically speaking the vikings were a more expansionist and explorist culture. But these migrations processes were done over several centuries so I`m unsure if there is any relation between the "viking forefathers" and the goths by the time of Attila. For example, there are historic theories suggesting that some of the great migrators depicted in the game such as the visigoths and ostrogoths originally migrated from the scandinavian region. Putting it in a bigger context, people originating from Scandinavia played a big role during the Attila-era.

There are evidence of trading with the roman empire going on in Visby on Gotland for example. I don`t think the "vikings forefathers" or scandinavians were unimportant during the Attila-era.
